Jessica Robles x The Local Artistry
Hey, Locals!
Is it just us or are you guys just as shocked that Summer is here already?!
Besides the heavy traffic and excruciating heat, Cali offers us a reason to head out to the beach and post that #SUMMER'17 selfie!
It also gave us some downtime to cook up a new interview with Los Angeles
photographer, Jessica Robles!
This 27-year-old has made a name for herself! She's done major work for 7 Hues Magazine, C'set Moi Magazine, and the well-known, Vogue Italia!
Get to know more about how she got started, her inspirations, and her thoughts on the use of the camera phone.
Q: When did you know that photography was for you?
A: When I was 15. In [high school] I had chosen a Black and White Film Photography class as my elective. It was love at first sight, and I’ve dedicated my life to photography since then.
Q: What kind of cameras do you own?
A: I prefer shooting on Nikon when it comes to digital photography. I have many film cameras I shoot with, but my favorite at the moment is my Canon AE1.
Q: How do you scout for the models that you want to work with?
A: Instagram and Facebook.
Q: It seems like anyone with a phone can be a photographer; do you feel like that puts a strain on professional photographers, like yourself, to make a name for themselves?
A: As the quality of phones get better, I have seen a lot more people shooting, and calling themselves photographers, but I feel it doesn’t really put a strain on “professional photographers”. I think there’s still a difference and someone is going to hire a professional with experience.
Q: You’re always behind the camera, but you also have a great fashion sense! What inspires your style?
A: The 60’s - 80’s inspire me. My mother’s fashion sense in the 60’s was great[!] I can’t get enough of our old family photos. I love going through them.
Q: What do you do during your downtime?
A: Lately it’s been gardening. Which I swore I would never do growing up, but it’s become a relaxing hobby as an adult. I don’t have a yard so I make all the magic happen on the patio. I have finally stopped killing everything, and I have lots of herbs and succulents growing. Gardening has taught me lots of patience!
Q: What piece of advice has stuck with you throughout your career?
A: Don’t say anything at all if you don’t have anything nice to say.
Q: Are there any projects that you’re currently working on?
A: Yes. I am working on a fun underwater project right now, it’s experimental. It’s something I’ve never tried before, so I can’t wait to see how to works out.
